Cosun Beet Company Prepares for Breakthrough in Energy Savings
Cosun Beet Company has started the construction of an additional thick juice tank at both the sugar factories in Dinteloord and Hoogkerk. This step marks significant progress in our ongoing efforts to make the sugar production and transport process more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Thick juice is the liquid precursor to sugar. This liquid, with a 68% sugar content, is partially processed directly into sugar during the sugar production process. Another part is stored in thick juice tanks. Each thick juice tank can hold 80,000 tons of thick juice. There are already three tanks in both Dinteloord and Hoogkerk, and this year, one more will be added at each location. The first construction work started at the end of last year. The tank should be ready and operational by the end of this year.
More Energy-Efficient and Environmentally Friendly
Thanks to the new thick juice tanks, more thick juice can be stored during the beet campaign. This allows us to produce sugar year-round. This has several advantages. The most important is that by around 2030, Cosun Beet Company will be able to switch to a much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly process. In short, waste heat from the production process will be reused by using a heat pump to bring the steam back to temperature, reducing natural gas consumption and CO2 emissions by approximately 50% compared to 2021.
Fewer Transports
The second advantage is that fewer transports are needed. With a more consistent sugar production process, storage in more distant sugar depots is no longer necessary. Storage at the production location will suffice.
The construction of additional thick juice tanks fits very well within our decades-long commitment to energy savings and emission reductions.
